Why a Green Ostrich?

There is a myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand to avoid threats in hopes that their problems will disappear. Too many of us are doing that with the climate crisis. We are burying our heads in the sand hoping that one day we’ll wake up to a new future.

But the reality is that ostriches are not burying their heads in the sand to ignore the world around them. They are, in fact, rotating their eggs that are buried just beneath the surface. They’re protecting their young. That is exactly what we need to be doing – protecting the next generation – and that is my motivation with this blog.

This blog is about how we can protect our young by tackling the climate crisis, largely but not exclusively in the clothing industry. A lot of my blog entries focus on running and sport and how athletes can reduce their environmental impact through their clothing and gear choices. I write about running because I’m a runner. It’s how I see the world. It centers me emotionally and mentally. But this blog is for anyone. The themes, lessons, advice, facts, and musings are universal. I may be writing about a pair of running shoes, but they could easily be a pair of fashion trainers made for a runway model or a pair of high heels made for a gala. The race t-shirt I write about could just as easily be a piece of branded conference swag or the shirt your company gives you on the first day on the job.

Oh, and did you know that ostriches are among the world’s best endurance runners? Their predicted marathon finish time is 45 minutes!
